At the age of six, Pierre began piano lessons at the Fribourg Conservatory. In 2004, he completed his professional training with a teaching diploma in piano. During his studies, he was already teaching at a private music school, working as a co-répétiteur (piano accompanist), and performing in various rock and pop bands.
After graduating from the Bern University of the Arts in 2006, he obtained the certificates “NDK Instrument and Theory” and “NDK Composition and Arrangement.”
Since 2009, he has been working as a piano teacher at the Fribourg Conservatory, teaching in Düdingen and Wünnewil. This is his main professional activity, which he pursues with passion and dedication.
As an active pianist, he currently devotes most of his time to piano accompaniment. At the Fribourg Conservatory, he accompanies recital classes and examinations. From 1999 to 2024, he was regularly involved in Swiss national, cantonal, and regional soloist competitions - an activity he concluded in 2024 in order to devote more time to his family and to composition. Specializing in accompanying brass and woodwind instruments, he has built a repertoire of around 1000 works of all difficulty levels, ranging from beginners to university graduates. String instruments and singers also occasionally count among his musical partners.
For several years, he has been composing and arranging music for various instruments, ensembles, and orchestral settings. He quickly celebrated early successes. With his composition Metropolitan Suite for brass band, he won the international composition competition for the Swiss National Youth Brass Band (NJBB) in 2008. Since then, he has been a sought-after composer in the world of brass bands and brass instruments.
Commissioned by the Swiss Brass Band Association, he composed Cha das Caldeiras as the set test piece for third division brass bands at the Swiss Brass Band Championship 2014 in Montreux.
His work Colosseo was composed on behalf of the Fribourg Cantonal Music Association as the set test piece for third division brass bands at the Fribourg Cantonal Music Festival 2015.
His works have been recorded by renowned brass bands such as Fodens’ Band (England), the Swiss National Youth Brass Band, and Brass Band Fribourg.
In 2009 and 2011, he composed the brass quartet works Humoreske e Intermezzo, Imaginations, and Quarté as set test pieces for the Swiss Quartet Competition (SSQW).
In 2023, he was commissioned by the Brass Band de l’Elite de Cressier, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary, to compose approximately 30 minutes of music (eight pieces) to accompany the humorous narrative Le pied d’Estale by Jacques Béalle.
Also in 2023, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Fanfare l’Edelweiss of Semsales, ARBRAcadabrant was premiered - a monumental spectacle combining theatre, music, and choral singing. For the story and texts specially created by Philippe Huwiler, Pierre Schmidhäusler composed around 90 minutes of music for brass band and mixed choir.
Commissioned compositions for the Fribourg Conservatory, for soloists with piano and/or ensemble accompaniment, small ensembles, wind orchestras, string orchestras, and children are also part of his work. These pieces have enabled performers to achieve success at competitions, concerts, and other events. For solo piano, he mainly composes and arranges music for his piano students. Countless (as yet) unpublished arrangements and original piano compositions are kept in his archive.
His works are published by WoodBrass Music AG and Difem.
