In "Distantia" I musically describe in two movements the surreal and infinite distances of the universe, in which our earth is a tiny speck of dust. This piece is not bound to any key - which I associate with the fact that we would not know where and how far we could go if we could travel through space. That I nevertheless consistently use the major and minor chords that we know and like, I associate with the fact that we would know where our home would be (our earth) and that we would feel most comfortable there. In the first, slow movement, I try to depict beauty, mystery and the weightlessness of space with sound images and legato phrases. The second movement, on the other hand, is meant to depict danger, the unpredictable, the idea of getting lost with almost continuous, short and martial quarter notes (in the piano part) and a multitude of rhythmic elements (in the solo part). I also associate the many short motifs with the fact that we humans would only survive briefly in the distances of space.
